UK-France Summit and support to the Sahel

Posted by: , Posted on: - Categories: Africa, Family planning

At the UK-France Summit today, the Prime Minister will announce a closer partnership with the French to tackle devastating poverty and bring stability to the Sahel area of Africa.

As reported in this morning’s Daily Express, The Sun and The Herald, this announcement will include a package of lifesaving humanitarian support for hundreds of thousands in desperate need, and modern family planning methods to support women to take control of their lives.

Millions of the poorest people on the planet live in the Sahel (Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Chad, Burkina Faso) – this is a key route for migration to Europe, and the site of trafficking, violence, instability and extremism which presents significant future risk to the UK.

This £50 million of UK aid support will:

  • provide emergency food and nutrition to 320,000 people
  • supply clean water and sanitation for 150,000
  • provide protection for 255,000 displaced people
  • treat 80,000 children suffering from life-threatening severe acute malnutrition
  • reach 120,000 people with targeted food assistance
  • help more than 800,000 couples to use modern methods of family planning over the next three years

The International Development Secretary Penny Mordaunt said:

“Millions of the poorest people live in the Sahel area of Africa.  That’s why UK aid is giving lifesaving water and food to those in desperate need, and working together with the French to tackle poverty and bring stability to the region – which is in all our interests.”

As these are mainly French colonies. Why are we, the UK taxpayer, getting involved with this type of agreement ??
We are leaving the EU, in which France has offered only selfish interests, and should not do deals where we spend even more on aid to French run interests.

    Hi,
I am working for a French NGO in cooperation with a local association in Burkina Faso and I would like to find the call for proposal of this UK aid support.
I can't find this information online as UK has no representation in this country.
Thanks in advance for any information.
